Kaikoura yellow Lighthouse

Yellow lighthouse Kaikoura
Yellow lighthouse Kaikoura

As far as lighthouses go, this is probably the smallest one I have come across - but certainly the most vivid... I haven't been able to get any history or information on it, so would be happy for anyone to comment on where to find more info...

This is not the original lighthouse. I was born in Kaikoura in 1950 and the lighthouse I remember was much bigger and white. My grandfather was a farmer on the peninsula and during the war he worked 8 hour shifts at the lighthouse as a coastwatcher, reporting on every plane and boat that passed. He was an expert at Morse code and could actually speak the message as he heard it and not many could do that. The 4 men who were coast watchers had a great vegetable garden beside the lighthouse, so my mother tells me, as they had plenty of spare time for tending it. When digging the garden they found many Maori artifacts of bone and greenstone. I have tried to find more information about when the lighthouse was replaced but no luck. Maybe the Kaikoura Museum can help.

Hello again. I have just spoken to my mother and she says there has only ever been one lighthouse . It must have seemed big when I was a child!! Jen

  3. Hi Jen
Thanks for your comments. It certainly makes for interesting reading. Next time we are there, I'll make a point of looking for the veggie patch. Hehe yes, everything looks so much bigger from a child's perspective
